Description
Gentamicin is an antibiotic extracted from the fermentation liquid of Mieromonospora purpurea. It is usually used in the form of a stable salt – Gentamicin Sulphate.
Gentamicin is a broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic of the aminoglycoside group, strongly effective against Gram-negative Bacillus, Bacillus pyocyaneous, Proteus, etc. Gentamicin is particularly effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is some what less active against Salmonella, Shigellae, Gonococci, and Staphylococci.
Septicaemia and neonatal sepsis, serious complicated and recurrent urinary tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, G.I. infections including peritonitis, infections of the skin, bones, soft tissues and burns; CNS infections including meningitis. It is the drug choice in serious bacterial infections due to unknown or unidentified causative organism, mixed infection, etc.
Eye/Ear Drops:
Bacterial infection of the external ear. Infections of the conjunctiva, cornea, eye lid margins, lacrimal duct, and other anterior ocular structures. Prophylaxis of infections of the eye in injuries and surgical procedures on the exterior of the eye such as burns, lacerations, chemical injuries, removal of foreign body, infection of the external ear.
