Description
Indications
Severe malaria including cerebral malaria and as a second line drug in chloroquine resistant malaria cases only.
Contra-indications
Artemether injection and are containdicated in pregnancy unless the doctor considersit essential (as may be in the case of cerebral malaria)
Precautions/Warnings
Do not exceed the prescribed dose. Electrocardio graphic QT prolongation, nursing women.
Interactions
Erythromycin, terfenadine, asetmizole, probucol, Class 1a antiarrhymic agents (quinidine, procainamide, disopyramide), Class III antiarrhythmic agents (amiodarone, retylium), bepridil, sotalol, tricyclic antidepressants, some neuroleptics and phenothiazines.
Adverse Effects
Decrease in reticulocytes count, slight rise of SGOT and SGPT may occur in individual cases.
Cardiotoxicity has been observed with high doses.
Dosage & Administration
Adults:
1 ampoule containing 80 mg twice a day by I.M. route (160 mg/day) for 1st day followed by 1 ampoule containing 80 mg once a day by M.I. injection for the next four days.
Children:
1.6 mg/Kg twice a day by M.I. injection on the first day followed by 1.6 mg/kg once a day for the next four days.
The total dosage is 9.6 mg/kg in children.
